HCA to hold Walk for Affordable Housing

Housing Corporation of Arlington will host its 17th annual Walk for Affordable Housing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 29.

The walk begins and ends on the Jason Russell House commons at 7 Jason St., where HCA holds pre- and post-walk activities for all ages including free food, face painting, live music, balloons, Lego tables, dancing, a raffle, and a prize wheel headed by the Dave & Buster’s Street Team.

The walk raises awareness about the housing crisis in Arlington and generates critical financial support for HCA’s Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention Programs. Last year, over 120 participants raised more than $36,000 to support and grow HCA’s housing programs.

Pam Hallett, HCA executive director, said: “It’s a wonderful community festival to celebrate the start of spring — and it’s a reminder to Arlington residents that there is a desperate need among our neighbors. Every day we have people walking in saying their rent has gone up and they need help. Our waitlist for affordable housing is more than 700 households long.”

Anyone is welcome to join the walk and enjoy live music by the Stanley & The Undercovers and The Hot Tamale Brass Band, entertainment by Molly the Stilt Walker, free T-shirts for participants and snacks donated by Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, Andrina’s Pizza, and Not Your Average Joe’s. Attendees can win raffle prizes donated by area businesses including $100 gift certificates to Legal Seafood, an acupuncture treatment, a fitness class, massage therapy, toys, tickets to the New England Aquarium, and Red Sox autographed items. Escorted by the band, the walkers will travel a 3-mile route up Massachusetts Avenue, passing the Old Schwamb Mill, the intersection of Mass. and Park avenues, and many of HCA’s own affordable units, then return back to the Jason Russell house.
